Garbage, Rubbish, Trash, and Recycling Regulations Summary

Garbage, Rubbish, Trash and Recycling Schedule:

Monday and Thursday:
Ashwood through Edgewood Road, including Sands Point Road and Cambridge Avenue from Sands Point to Edgewood. The South Orchard Beach area including Linwood South, Marwood South, Kaywood, Norwood, Oldwood and Orchard Beach Boulevard. All of Manhasset Isle.

Tuesday and Friday:
Firwood through Kirkwood, including Cambridge Avenue from Firwood through Kirkwood, Ford Place, Linwood North, Marwood North, Cornwell's Lane, Dunes Land and West Drive.

Note: Anchor Way, Sands Court and Toms Point may have different days.

Tuesday and Thursday:
Manorhaven Blvd from Sands Point Road to Kirkwood Road, including all Businesses and Apartments.

Yard Waste Schedule:
Starting with the first Wednesday in April, through the last Wednesday in December, pickup on every Wednesday excluding holidays.

Holiday Schedule:
There will be no pickups on New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, or any other day that the disposal facility is closed.

A scheduled pickup that falls on a legal holiday, or when the disposal facility is closed, will be picked up on the following day.

Special Bulk Pickup Schedule:
The Village will schedule a special bulk pickup once a year. A notice will be published in the Village Newspaper of the date and what items can be put out for collection.

When you May Put Out Items for Collection:
Refuse (or trash) may be put out at the curb after 5 pm on the day before pickup. To enhance the appearance of the Village, please wait until after sundown.

All Items must be put out by 7 AM to ensure pickup that day

What you May Put Out For Collection

CONTAINERS

Place regular garbage, rubbish and trash in watertight metal or plastic containers with the lid on.

  • Loose plastic bags of trash are not acceptable.
  • Containers may be up to 30 gallons in capacity.
  • Maximum weight of any filled container is 50 pounds.
  • Print the house number, (if there is more than one residence in the
  • building, include the apartment number) on each trash and recycling
  • container in numbers two inches high.

Number of Trash Containers per Pickup:

  • One Family Home - Up to three trash containers.
  • Two Family Home - Up to three trash containers per unit.

Number of Rubbish Containers per Week:

Rubbish includes household cleanup and homeowner generated waste from home improvements. It must be put out in covered containers. (Contractors Must Dispose of Their Construction Debris)

  • One Family Home - Up to two rubbish containers each week.
  • Two Family Home - Up to two rubbish containers per unit each week.

WHERE TO PUT YOUR CONTAINERS

Place containers and other items to be picked up on your property. Do Not Place in Street

  • Do not place items behind any structure, such as a fence, wall or hedge; parked car or below ground surface - they will not be picked up.
  • Do not leave containers uncovered anywhere on your property.

Liquid Waste:

Drain garbage of any free liquid before you put it in a container.

Large Items: (see page Four for how to schedule a pickup)

Large items include refrigerators, freezers, television sets, carpeting, rugs or padding, fence posts or rails no longer than 4 feet; stoves, hot water heaters, or other major appliances; household or office furniture and cartons.

  • Cut carpeting, rugs or padding to 4 foot lengths - roll and tie securely.
  • Remove doors form appliances (refrigerators, etc) for child safety.
  • Break cartons down into bundles no longer than 4 feet by 4 feet and tie securely. Call DeJana Industries at 944-7445 for Pickup.

Recyclables:

Recyclables include non-deposit glass, metal containers, plastics and newspapers, magazines, junk mail and any other materials designated by the Commissioner of the Department of Solid Waste Management of the Town of North Hempstead. (Contractors Must Dispose of Their Construction Debris)

  • Put out recyclables whenever garbage is scheduled to be picked up.
  • Place recyclables, except for paper, in the blue recycling bucket issued by the Village.
  • Place newspapers next to the recycling bucket, either securely tied in bundles or tied in brown paper bags.
  • You may purchase additional or replacement recycling containers at the Village Hall for $20.00

Yard Waste:

Yard waste is organic yard and garden waste including leaves, grass clippings, garden debris and brush.

  • Place yard waste in plastic bags strong enough to prevent tearing.
  • Cut branches that are too big or that may tear the bag so that they are not larger than 4 inches in diameter or longer than 4 feet.
  • Tie branches into bundles weighing no more than 20 pounds.
  • If you remove poison ivy, double bag it to protect the sanitation men.
  • If you remove rose bushes or other thorny bushes, place a note on the bag to alert the sanitation men.

Yard Waste Pick Up:

Every Wednesday from the first Wednesday in April through the last Wednesday in December:

  • Put out up to 6 bags per household.
  • There will be several weeks of special spring and fall cleanup where more bags may be set out. (Maximum 10 bags).
  • The Village Newspaper will announce the beginning and end of yard waste collection, and the special spring and fall cleanup dates.
  • Christmas Tree pickup is the first two Wednesdays in January.

Items that may not be put out for pickup

The following items must be disposed of either at the Town dump or through the Town's STOP Program, as applicable.

Hazardous waste, volatile materials, propane tanks, bricks, broken asphalt, concrete, granite, marble and all other stone and stoneware, porcelain, mortar, terra cotta, lime, gypsum, asbestos, automobile parts (engines, transmissions, rear ends, auto body parts, etc), pipes, infectious and biological waste, full paint cans (you may put out empty latex cans if they are dried out), chain link fences and cables, all construction materials, scrap metal and plumbing materials.

Complaints:
If you have a problem with garbage pickup call DeJana Industries at 944-7445. The problem must be corrected within 4 hours.

Large Item Pickup:
DeJana will remove one item per week per household at no cost. Large items will not be picked up during a week which has a holiday. To schedule a pickup, call DeJana Industries before you put out any large items at 944-7445.

Hazardous Materials (STOP Collection):
The Town provides for disposal of hazardous materials several times a year. Call Solid Waste Management 802 West Shore Road, Port Washington at 767-4600 for the latest information, or check with the Village.

Cleanliness of Property:
It is unlawful to deposit any ashes, garbage, rubbish or refuse on any lot, plot of land, or in any building in the Village, except in approved containers or otherwise secured as provided in the regulations for collection and disposal.

Multi-Family Buildings:
The owner, general agent and manager of buildings that contain two or more residential units is responsible to provide each tenant with the containers for both garbage and recycling that are required under the regulations, and is responsible to ensure that the proper unit or apartment number is placed on the container. See the garbage regulations for all of the obligations for multi-family dwellings.

Dumpsters:
You must apply to the Village for permission to use a dumpster and follow the regulations for use.

Vacating Leased Premises:
When a tenant or occupant vacates leased premises; the tenant and the owner, general manager, and agent of the premises is/are responsible to dispose of all solid waste and bulky items, including furniture. Refer to the garbage regulations for complete details.

Reimbursement to the Village for Pickup:
The Village may remove and dispose of certain solid waste or material and may charge the resulting costs and expenses against the land from which the material was removed. The charge may be applied as a municipal lien and may be added to the next tax bill. This applies to:

  • Material left out for pickup that violates any of the garbage regulations.
  • Material left out for pickup that is excluded material. See Items that may not be put out for pickup in this brochure.
